Juneau County, Wisconsin was established in 1857 when the State of Wisconsin passed legislation separating lands west of the Wisconsin River from what was then Adams County. After a contest with neighboring New Lisbon, the county seat was established in Maugh's Town, which is known today as Mauston. The county was named after Solomon Juneau, a Milwaukee legislator who influenced the legislation establishing Juneau County. The county board of early Juneau County convened only once a year to conduct the business of the slow moving, remote county.

Lake Petenwell is a man-made lake in central Wisconsin located in Adams, Juneau, and Wood counties next to Castle Rock Lane. Created in 1948 by the Wisconsin River Power Company, this lake covers over 23,000 acres making it the second-largest inland lake. While most of the shoreline is only 3-5 feet deep, the shoreline is perfect for water activities.
Barnum Bay, on the east side of the lake, just minutes from Grand View Shores, is host/harbor to many beautiful sailboats who have found a great home on Petenwell due to the size of the lake. Like fishing? No problem. Petenwell is also home for panfish, walleye, musky, large and small mouth bass, northern pike, sturgeon and catfish.
Whether you enjoy water sports, sailboating, or fishing, this lake is sure to please. Perfect for year round fun, this lake is great for winter or summer activities and is even surrounded by restaurants, a community theatre, golf course and two casinos.
